Yup, that is Tom Kalinske doing the SEGA scream!

Tom Kalinske was SEGA’s main man back during the 16-bit era of console dogfighting. Kalinske oversaw much of Mega Drive’s rise to to prominence and experienced a great deal of the tension between the Japanese and American divisions of SEGA in the 90s. Much of this is captured in Blake J. Harris’ book Console Wars.

However, in a recent interview with Kalinske conducted by moderators of the subreddit /r/retrogaming, Kalinske has revealed a ton of fascinating facts including that SEGA flirted with the 3DO’s M2 technology with units even getting into prototype stage, SEGA passed on N64 and Virtual Boy technology (thank the heavens), and he discusses the decisions behind both 32X and SEGA CD.

Give it a listen:

It is a fascinating slice of history from a marketing icon. Check out the podcast: here.

If you prefer to read up on the interview first – check out Rev. Rob Times. Of course, head over to the subreddit /r/retrogaming to check out all the fine work being done over there.
